Artist/Band:Al Haig Trio
Name:Blue Manhattan
Cat No.:MYCJ-30377
Performed by:Al Haig (piano)
Reggie Johnson (bass)
Frank Gant
Release Date:03/15/2006
Description:Al Haig (1924 - 1982) was a bebop pianist who was, and still is, more revered in Japan than in his home country. Many of his hard-to-find albums from minor labels are still in print in that country in the Far East. Haig was heavily influenced by Bud Powell, but had lighter touch, less angular and arguably more sophisticated approach.

After a long period of little recorded output, Haig made a comeback in 1974 and began recording again. Blue Manhattan was recorded in 1980, two years before his death, for Interplay Records, an independent label founded by Toshiya Taenaka, a Japanese expat and long resident of California.

Haig's performance here shows his maturity and depth. He pays respects to Bud Powell by playing a powerful "Un Poco Loco," and he tackles modal compositions by younger musicians such as John Coltrane's "Impressions" and Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" with great success. Frank Gant's busy but spot-on drumming is quite amazing, and adds to the charm of this strong trio album.

Produced by Toshiya Taenaka. Recorded at RCA Studio, NYC in 1980. Originally released by Interplay Records. This reissue CD was released by M&I in March 2006.
