| | Release Date: | | 04/21/2007 | | Description: | | The present DVD Jazz In Denmark is a compilation of three short films that contain previously unreleased footages of Bud Powell (1962), New York Contemporary Five (1963) and Dollar Brand (1965), all shot in Copenhagen, Denmark. Only 999 copies are made, and each of these special limited edition is numbered.
Marshmallow Records' owner and producer Mitsuo Johfu has strong ties with Denmark, and he saw these films back in the 1960s and fell in love with them. He immediately wanted to commercially release the films and began negotiating with the producers. It took him about 30 years but he has finally made these rare, precious films available.
STOPFORBUD / BUD POWELL
Moving images of Bud Powell, the legendary pianist who changed the course of jazz piano, are extremely rare. Budding movie producers and jazz enthusiasts caught the legend when he came to Denmark during his Scandinavian tour. Footages of Powell walking at various locales in Copenhagen are accompanied by his previously unreleased trio recordings (three tunes), with Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen and Jorn Elniff. Narration is provided by Dexter Gordon. Playing time is 11 minutes 30 seconds.
FUTURE ONE / NEW YORK CONTEMPORARY FIVE
A short-lived but influential group that bridged hardbop and avant garde jazz, New York Contemporary Five was a brainchild of Danish altoist John Tchicai and American tenorman Archie Schepp. The exciting group, also featuring Don Cherry on cornet, was caught on film during their live performance (one tune) at the famed Cafe Montmartre in Copenhagen. The sound and images are not synchronized, unfortunately, but Shepp's powerful and brilliant solo is something to behold. Playing time is 8 minutes 53 seconds.
PORTRAIT OF A BUSHMAN / DOLLAR BRAND
Now known as Abdullah Ibrahim, South African pianist Dollar Brand was living in Copenhagen for a while in the 1960s. This film depicts Brand being woken up by the producer, getting into a car and rushing to a studio where he performs with his trio, which includes Johnny Gertze and Makaya Ntshoko. Three tunes are included. Playing time is 8 minutes 8 seconds.
All the films are in black and white, and the quality of sound (probably mono) and picture is less than prestine. The producers were basically young jazz enthusiasts at that time, and while they tried to express their artistic visions through jazz musicians they admired, some footages might seem amateurish to today's viewers. There are no bonus materials.
But what comes through is a glimpse of the vibrant jazz scene that existed in the 1960s in Copenhagen, Denmark. Mr. Johfu made a conscious decision not to "retouch" the picture and sound quality, and not to add interview footages out of respect for the original films and producers who made them with very little money and lots of heart.
DVD Information: Region-free (Can be played anywhere in the world). NTSC TVs are supported. Compatibility with PAL TVs is not guaranteed. Black and White. Total playing time is 28 minutes 32 seconds.
If you order this DVD from Eastwind Import, we will send you a copy of the complete producer's notes, originally written in Japanese and translated into English by Hajime Sato!
