| Artist/Band: | | Gene DiNovi | | Name: | | All Through the Night | | Cat No.: | | MMEX-113 | | Performed by: | | Gene DiNovi (piano) Neil Swainson (bass) Kazuaki Yokoyama (drums)
| | Release Date: | | 08/21/2007 | | Description: | | Pianist Gene DiNovi has had a fruitful relationship with the owner and producer of Marshmallow Records for 17 years, which so far has produced 12 albums. His latest album was recorded live on stage (without audience) in November 2006 during his sixth tour of Japan.
One of the few surviving pianists who was in the midst of the bebop movement in New York in the mid-1940s, DiNovi has captivated the Japanese jazz fans (as well as fans in Toronto where he now resides) with his inimitable taste, elegance and joyful sense of swing. On this album, he is accompanied by Canadian bassist Neil Swainson -- a true master of his instrument who uses his formidable technique only to serve the music -- and a young Japanese drummer Kazuaki Yokoyama who was only 21 years old at the time of the recording.
The tasteful treatment of well-known standards such as "I Concentrate on You," "All Through the Night" and "Charade" will delight many jazz fans. Long-time fans of DiNovi will be delighted to hear the relatively unlikely selections such as "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Jordu." DiNovi provides two attractive original compositions: "The Dean," dedicated to Hank Jones, and "Super Star," a salute to Benny Carter.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable, charming piano trio album, and a must-have item for fans of Mr. DiNovi.
Recroded on November 2, 2006 at Sugita Theatre, Yokohama, Japan. This CD comes in a "paper sleeve" or "mini-LP" package. | | Eastwind Import Price: | |
