-Doug Ramsey
The eagerly awaited 9th Marshmallow release by the great Swedish pianist Jan Lundgren is here! It was recorded in September 2007 during his tour of Japan with two great Danes: virtuoso and rock-steady bassist Jesper Lundgaard and ever vivid and crisp drummer Alex Riel.
With his Scandinavian trio, Lundgren continues his exploration of the Great American Songbook. The collective deep knowledge of the Songbook and jazz tunes between Lundgren and producer Mitsuo Johfu is reflected in the selection of lesser-known gems like "Tasty Pudding" (by Al Cohn), "Soul Train" (Tadd Dameron), "Soft Summer Breeze" (Eddie Heywood) and "Velvet Moon" (DeLange/Myrow).
Everything we've come to love about this artist is captured on this CD: warm, woody tone that comes from a surprisingly soft touch, melodious improvisation, harmonic sophistication and the elusive ability to make bebop-based music sound modern and fresh.
This is a wonderful recording by one of the best piano trios in the world today. The artistry of the three musicians is often understated but simply remarkable. Very highly recommended!
Produced by Mitsuo Johfu. Recorded at Sugita Theatre, Yokohama, Japan in September 2007. This CD comes in a "paper sleeve" or "mini-LP" package with a full-length English liner notes by Peter H. Larsen. | | Eastwind Import Price: | |
