| | Release Date: | | 04/23/2008 | | Description: | | Swing Journal Gold Disc
Born in 1973 in Sioux City, Iowa, Ryan Kisor discovered his talent early. In 1990 he won the Thelonius Monk Institute's trumpet competition at the age of just 17. As a technically and musically accomplished trumpeter, Kisor has performed and/or recorded with the Mingus Big Band, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Gerry Mulligan, Wynton Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon and Horace Silver.
Kisor is very popular in Japan as well, and he has released no less than seven CDs as leader for the market. Conception - Cool And Hot is his debut album from the young label Birds Records. Together with alto saxophonist and bandmate in the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Sherman Irby, Kisor forms a two-horn frontline to put his own spin on the straight ahead bebop.
The cracking band tackles songs associated with the "cool" school of jazz -- the piano-less "Line For Lyons" made famous by Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker, "Conception" by George Shearing, and "Enigma" played by Miles Davis -- but the performance is hot! Kisor's playing is intelligent and inventive; Irby has a very attractive tone, and the rhythm section (especially the drummer Willie Jones III) swings!
Produced by Shigeyuki Kawashima. Recorded at Sear Sound Studio, NYC, October 7, 2007. | | Eastwind Import Price: | |
