| Description: | | Jackie Paris (1924-2004) was a song stylist and guitarist, who, according to Leonard Feather, was "one of the handful of male singers who have retained the true jazz sound." He toured and performed with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Max Roach, Duke Jordan, Charles Mingus, Lionel Hampton and Dizzy Gillespie.
With cheerful and warm tone, Paris had a distinctive, relaxed and sophisticated style. Some fans point out his stylistic similarities with Matt Dennis, Buddy Greco, Bob Dorough and Bobby Troup. Despite his long career, he left only about 10 official recordings as a leader, and the present album, originally released by East-West Records, is considered as one of the best.
This first-ever release on CD by SSJ Records consists of three sessions -- two with a trio led by guitarist Barry Galbraith and one with a quartet that included Hank Jones on piano (credited as "John James") and Eddie Wasserman on tenor sax. Created with impeccable taste and musicianship, this is a very delightful vocal album, and a must-have for a fan of Jackie Paris.
Originally produced by Nesuhi Ertegun and released as East-West 4002. Recorded in 1957 and 1958. This first-time-on-CD reissue was released by SSJ Records of Japan in August, 2005. |
