| Artist/Band: | | Will Boulware | | Name: | | Summertime [Hybrid SACD] | | Cat No.: | | VRCL-18839 | | Performed by: | | Will Boulware (piano) Richard Bona (bass) Billy Kilson (drums) Eric Alexander (tenor sax)
| | Release Date: | | 08/22/2007 | | Description: | | Versatile pianist and composer Will Boulware is perhaps associated with the fusion or crossover music, having recorded a legendary album Crystal Green in 1976 with Michael Brecker, Eric Gale, Cornell Dupree, Gordon Edwards and Steve Gadd. Since then, he has toured and recorded with Maceo Parker, the Blues Brothers, John Scofield and Carla Bley, among others.
Since 2004, the Japanese label Eighty-Eight's has been focusing on the more "jazzy" side of Boulware with two CDs that emphasized jazz standards. Summertime is his third solo CD from Eighty-Eight's, and his unique music, which can be placed somewhere in between fusion and straight ahead jazz, is as strong as ever.
This CD's strengths are many, but the participation of young and phenomenally talented bassist Richard Bona and drummer Billy Kilson must be mentioned first. Bona's amazing basswork -- a logical extension of Jaco Pastorius -- is often breathtaking, and Kilson's colorful drumming leaves one with an impression that he must have more than four limbs!
Tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander makes guest appearances on three tunes and makes strong solo statements. Boulware's original compositions are quite attractive and has excellent rhythmic momentum. His daring arrangements of well-known jazz tunes (standard "On Green Dolphin Street," Coltrane's "Moment's Notice" and Wayne Shorter's "E.S.P." are very modern and exciting.
Finally, the recorded sound (recorded to analog tape and then mixed and mastered using the latest DSD technology) is brilliant. If you have a good stereo system, you'll be amazed by the sound that is startlingly clear, vivid and dynamic. Crank it up and enjoy!
Produced by Yasohachi "88" Itoh. Recorded at Avatar Studio New York on October 9, 2006. Analog recording mixed and mastered in DSD. This hybrid SACD contains a stereo CD layer and a stereo SACD layer, and can be played on any standard CD players, SACD players and universal players. | | Eastwind Import Price: | |
