He's had a long and successful career despite serious setbacks he's suffered due to a lip injury and tonsillar cancer from which he has made miraculous comebacks. Ohno is a two-time GRAMMY winner and has performed and recorded with Art Blakey, Gil Evans and Roy Haynes, among others. Sakura is Ohno's 11th leader album and debut CD from the ONE label, a branch of 55 Records. The concept of the album is to play beautiful, well-known melodies with tasteful jazz arrangements. The tunes include Japanese traditional folk melodies ("Sakura Sakura," "Red Dragonfly" and "Song of the Beach"), popular American/Spanish/English songs and two of Ohno's original compositions ("Firefly" and "Bubbles"). Supported by arranger/keyboardist Soichi Noriki, Ohno plays these tunes beautifully with his gorgeous tone, and displays his formidable improvisational skills. The simple and relatively straight forward delivery and arrangements effectively convey the emotional impact of these melodies, evoking the feelings of love and longing. Heartily recommended!
