| | Release Date: | | 08/20/2008 | | Description: | | Beginning in 1995, Enja Records of Germany released a series of Chet Baker's previously unreleased materials and called it "The Legacy" series. The four hard-to-find albums are now reissued by Universal Japan on a brand-new SHM-CD format that offers superior sound and is compatible with all regular CD players.
Third in the series is Why Shouldn't You Cry, a compilation of Baker's collaborations with German vibraphonist Wolfgang Lackerschmid that had been recorded in three different sessions in 1979 and 1987. Baker and Lackerschmid found themselves to be very compatible musically in their first recording session in 1979, and they played and toured together often for the next ten years.
In addition to the sympatico duo, one session included a guitarist (Nicola Stilo) or a bassist (Günther Lenz), and another session had an all-star American rhythm section of Larry Coryell, Buster Williams and Tony Williams. Lackerschmid included a song dedicated to Baker and recorded after he passed away with singer Lillias White and Lee Konitz.
The romantic and almost ethereal qualities of Baker's trumpet were a perfect match for the contemplative and warm sounds of Lackerschmid's vibraphone. Together they made beautiful music. For the first time, we can listen to these recordings with a clearer, more analog-like sound of SHM-CD. The CD also includes the original English liner notes. A must-own recording for fans of Chet Baker!
Tracks 2, 5 & 7 recorded on January 8 and 9, 1979; Tracks 3, 4 & 8 recorded in Novenber 1979 in Germany. Tracks 1 and 6 recorded on August 26-28, 1987 in Germany.
