| Artist/Band: | | Bennie Wallace | | Name: | | The Nearness Of You [SHM-CD] | | Cat No.: | | GQCP-59040 | | Performed by: | | Bennie Wallace (tenor sax) Kenny Barron (piano) Eddie Gomez (bass)
| | Description: | | Bennie Wallace (b. 1946) is a jazz tenor saxophonist who is somewhat underappreciated in his home country but has a huge following in Europe and Japan. His underexposure is partly due to his decision to concentrate on film music production for a better part of the 1990s, but he has recorded quite a few great albums for Germany's Enja Records since the late 1970s and after his "comeback" in 1998.
This is one of the four Enja albums -- now considered classics -- reissued by Universal Music Japan on its brand-new SHM-CD format that offers superior sound and is compatible with all regular CD players.
On this great-sounding release, Wallace plays in a drum-less trio format with two great jazz titans: Kenny Barron and Eddie Gomez. With his brawny and deep tone, Wallace plays standards relatively straight forward. His unpredictable wildness is rather controlled here, but one can still appreciate his unique deliveries and occasional surprises.
Deserving of special mention is the brilliant performance of Kenny Barron and the superb, detailed and warm sound of this recording. This is a very enjoyable collection of standards, performed by formidable veterans with skill and taste. Highly recommended both for music lovers and audiophiles!
Produced by Joe Harley. Recorded by Joseph Marciano on June 23 and 24, 2003 in New York. Mastered by Bernie Grundman. Originally released by Enja Records in 2003. This Japanese, limited SHM-CD edition was released by Universal Japan on August 20, 2008. | | Eastwind Import Price: | |
