| Artist/Band: | | Bennie Wallace | | Name: | | Someone To Watch Over Me [SHM-CD] | | Cat No.: | | GQCP-59041 | | Performed by: | | Bennie Wallace (tenor sax) Mulgrew Miller (piano) Peter Washington (bass) Yoron Israel (drums)
| | Description: | | Bennie Wallace (b. 1946) is n jazz tenor saxophonist who is somewhat underappreciated in his home country but has a huge following in Europe and Japan. His underexposure is partly due to his decision to concentrate on film music production for a better part of the 1990s, but he has recorded quite a few great albums for Germany's Enja Records since the late 1970s and after his "comeback" in 1998.
This is one of the four Enja albums -- now considered classics -- reissued by Universal Music Japan on its brand-new SHM-CD format that offers superior sound and is compatible with all regular CD players.
For his "comeback" record for Enja, Wallace decided to do a George Gershwin songbook. Supporting him is a wonderful piano trio of Mulgrew Miller, Peter Washington and Yoron Israel. Wallace displays his idiosincratic combination: the big, brawny tone reminiscent of Coleman Hawkins and freewheeling, wild improvisations that reminds one of Eric Dolphy. He plays the melody straight when it's appropriate, but his explosive solos peppered with "out" phrases make this album unpredictable and exciting.
Deserving of special mention is the superb, detailed and warm sound of this recording. Producer Joe Harley employed the two-track, analog recording -- which sounds the best -- and had it recorded and mastered by the best engineers in the industry. This CD also comes with full Englisn liner notes. Highly recommended both for music lovers and audiophiles!
Produced by Joe Harley. Recorded by Joseph Marciano on June 30 and July 1, 1998 in New York. Mastered by Bernie Grundman. Originally released by Enja Records in 2003. This Japanese, limited SHM-CD edition was released by Universal Japan on August 20, 2008. | | Eastwind Import Price: | |
