Pianist Eddie Higgins may not be a household name in the US, but is undoubtedly the most popular and most prolific musician in the roster of the Japanese independent label Venus Records. Since his Venus "debut" in 1997, Higgins has released more than 20 albums from the label.
His latest is a pair of solo piano albums, a collection of standards requested by the readers of Swing Journal, the premier Japanese jazz magazine. A list of top 40 requests was presented to Higgins, and the original intention was to record material for just one album. But after completing 15 tracks on the first day, which in itself is remarkable, Higgins wanted to keep going. So, an additional recording took place the following day, and he recorded another 15 tracks!
Not only that, the tracks are presented in the exact order in which they were recorded. There were no music sheets. Higgins is such a master pianist that his own pacing and sequencing of tunes, as well as the spontaneous "arrangement" of each tune, were very effective, and the producer didn't feel the need to change anything.
These two superbly recorded CDs prove why Higgins is so popular in Japan. It's all there -- his lovely sound, beautiful touch, elegant swing and melodious improvisation. Relax and enjoy the artistry of a true master! Recommended!
