Tessa Souter was born in London and worked most of her career as journalist before finally deciding to pursue her childhood dream of becoming a jazz singer. She went to New York in 1996 and began testing her singing abilities at jam sessions, and eventually studied with Mark Murphy and Shiela Jordan.
As you can hear on this stunning major debut album, Souter is clearly a major singing talent, with a clear, beautiful voice with a natural, unforced delivery. Her technique is solid, and the combination of her sultry yet sunny inflections and intelligent phrasing is quite attractive.
Venus producer Tetsuo Hara picked a really superb, all-star cast to support the relatively unknown singer. Jay Leonhart, Romero Lubambo, Joen Frahm and Billy Drummond are all first-call musicians in New York, but I was especially struck by the sublimely beautiful performance by pianist Kenny Werner. His unexpected chord work and harmonies are quite stunning on "The Look Of Love," performed by just Werner and Souter. Highly recommended!
