Toshiko Akiyoshi - Lew Tabackin Big Band was formed in Los Angeles in 1973. The rehearsal band of studio musicians had a clear concept: it would feature Akiyoshi as its sole composer/arranger and Tabackin as main soloist on tenor and flute. The band continued to record and tour until disbanded in 1982 when the two principals moved to New York. (They formed a new band called "Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra Featuring Lew Tabackin" which was active until 2003.)

With a flexible reed section each member of which was capable of switching instruments, the band had a distinctively colorful sound. With Akiyoshi's innovative compositions, Tabackin's superb solos and the band's tight execution, it was considered as one of the best big bands in the United States.

Together, the twin albums Live At Newport '77 and Live At Newport II consist of the entire concert performance on June 29, 1977, at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall, which took place as part of the New Port Jazz Festival in New York. The explosive and brilliant performance knocked out the audience. It was also a triumphant return to the Big Apple for Akiyoshi who struggled without much recognition in New York before she moved to Los Angeles.

This special limited edition is the world premier release of this legendary concert on CD. Arguably, this CD captured the most brilliant moment of this exceptional big band.

Produced by Hiroshi Isaka. Recorded live June 29, 1977 at New Port Jazz Festival New York. This reissue CD (world premier release; limited paper sleeve edition) was released in 2006.
