Clarence Penn (drums)
Release Date:11/21/2007
Description:Franco Ambrosetti is a unique trumpet/flugelhorn player who is also a successful businessman with a master's degree in economics. Born in Switzerland in 1941 to a father who was also a successful businessman and a musician, Ambrosetti made his professional appearance in 1961. Now considered as Europe's top player, he's played in many different countries with Phil Woods, Dexter Gordon, Cannonball Adderley, Joe Henderson, Michael Breckker, Mike Stern, Kenny Kirkland, John Scofield and Ron Carter.

The Wind presents the trumpeter in a new surrounding, accompanied by the current trio of pianist Uri Caine, with first-rate bassist Drew Gress and wonderful drummer Clarence Penn. For the first time in 10 years Ambrosetti is the only horn player on one of his albums. Concentrating on the trumpet and fuelled by the cooking energy of the trio, Ambrosetti's playing radiates a power and youthfulness that betray his age.

The eclectic tune selections include "The Wind" -- a seldom-performed but charming composition by Russ Freeman, "Doxy" by Sonny Rollinns and "I've Never Been In Love Before" by Frank Loesser. Uri Caine, who is in a straight-ahead, bebop-influenced mode here, contributed two compositions "Otello" and "Stiletto." "Frasi" and "Mike On Wings" are composed by Ambrosetti, the latter being a tribute tune to the late Michael Brecker. Ambrosetti and Penn engage in a spontaneous improvisation/composition on "African Breeze."

This is a very satisfying CD for fans of jazz trumpet. Indeed it is one of the best among the (increasingly rare) CDs featuring a trumpet player in a quartet setting, rivaling in quality those of such renowned players as Kenny Dorham, Blue Mitchell and Lee Morgan.

Recorded on February 11 & 13, 2007 in Switzerland.
