Description:No Name Horses is a Japanese all-star big band formed in 2004 under the leadership of internationally renowned pianist/composer/arranger Makoto Ozone for a recording project to back up the Japanese singer Kimiko Itoh ("Once You've Been In Love"). The album was a huge hit in Japan, and everybody in the big band felt that there was something special, so they continued to perform, rehearse and record together. Simply named II, this is the second, stand-alone CD of No Name Horses. They are truly an all-star band, which consists of best Japanese players who are, outside of this band, leaders of their own groups. Just among the Eastwind Import catalog, we have leader albums by Makoto Ozone, Eric Miyashiro, Kengo Nakamura and Eijiro Nakagawa. With the exception of a bonus track "Someone to Watch Over Me," the entire program consists of original compositions by the members of the band. Some of them are firmly rooted in the tradition of big band jazz (such as "Portrait of Duke" by Ozone, dedicated to Herb Pomeroy who used to teach Ellington's compositional style at Berklee College of Music), and others reflect more modern sensibilities ("Into The Sky" by Eijiro Nakagawa).

This is a truly world-class big band: Members are technically brilliant; they swing like mad; and their compositions and arrangements are fresh, challenging and accessible all at the same time. Highly recommended for fans of big band jazz!

Produced by Makoto Ozone. Recorded at Sony Music Studios Tokyo, December 2007 by Joe Ferla.
