Description:Tsuyoshi "Tommy" Tomioka is a supremely talented trombone player and composer who has been wowing fans in the ancient city of Kyoto. Tommy has been involved in many projects and bands with various music styles, but jazz has remained his true passion.

Five Spot After Dark is a very impressive major debut CD. With many years of experience under his belt, Tommy went to New York and played with the best musicians in the quintessential jazz city, even having the trombone genius Wycliffe Gordon for a couple of head-to-head battles. Tommy's instrumental and compositional prowess is amazing. His technique is assured, and his tone rich and attractive.

The supporting cast provides varied settings for Tommy to demonstrate his talent. Veteran pianist George Cables leads an accoustic piano trio in the majority of the tracks, augmented with Victor Goines on sax and Gordon on trombone. Satoshi Inoue, a Japanese guitarist who now lives in New York, lends his hands in a few tunes. Furthermore, the Japanese organ sensation, Akiko Tsuruga (see St. Louis Blues) backs Tommy on a couple of funky, bluesy tunes with her own trio.

This is a truly impressive debut CD from a talented, new artist. If you like the sound of the trombone, or simply good, swinging hard bop jazz, you'll appreciate this well-produced CD. Heartily recommended!

Produced by Makoto Kimata and Hisao Hirata. Recorded in New York and New Jersey, May 2005. Engineered by Katherine Miller and Ben Elliot. Swing Journal Gold Disc.
