Artist/Band: | | Sherman Irby | Name: | | Work Song - Dear Cannonball | Cat No.: | | XQDJ-1010 | Performed by: | | Sherman Irby (alto sax) Larry Willis (piano) Buster Williams (bass) Victor Lewis (drums)
| Release Date: | | 01/07/2009 | Description: | | Swing Journal Gold Disc!
Altoist Sherman Irby is not exactly a newcomer. Born in Alabama, he moved from Atlanta to New York in 1994. Since then, he has performed and recorded with Wynton Marsalis and his Lincoln Cenber Jazz Orchestra, Marcus Roberts and Roy Hargrove, just to name a few. He also had released five leader albums before this one.
Now, this wonderful alto saxophonist is re-introduced to us with his first CD from the Birds Records label. As the title suggests, Irby pays tribute to Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, a historic titan on his instrument. Irby is the sole horn player here, and a fabulous trio of top-notch veterans -- Larry Willis, Buster Williams and Victor Lewis -- support him impeccably.
Irby's tone is full, rich and quite beautiful. His style is soulful and intelligent, and his playing has a very prominent singing quality. He shows versatility, agility and great technical facility in different settings on this CD: John Coltrane's fiery "Countdown" is performed with just Victor Lewis accompanying, and "I'm in the Mood for Love" is performed by a duo between Irby and Williams.
This is a wonderful straight ahead album by one of the best alto saxophonists in New York who stands tall on the shoulders of Cannonball and other alto giants. The sound quality is very good as well. Recommended!
Produced by Shigeyuki Kawashima. Recorded by James Farber at Sear Sound Studio, NY, on October 15, 2008. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
