Artist/Band: | | Kengo Nakamura | Name: | | Generations | Cat No.: | | FNCJ-5528 | Performed by: | | Kengo Nakamura (bass) Junior Mance (piano) Danny Grissett (piano) Clarence Penn (drums)
| Release Date: | | 10/22/2008 | Description: | | One of my favorite Japanese bass players, Kengo Nakamura's fifth leader album features his strong bass sound in a piano trio format. In addition to enlisting the support of brilliant drummer Clarence Penn, Nakamura decided to feature two pianists from two different generations -- his contemporary and sensational Danny Grissett and the great octogenarian, Junior Mance.
The two trios perform Nakamura's original compositions as well as those by his main influences -- Charles Mingus and Duke Ellington. Mance shows his blues and swing roots on three tunes; on the beautiful "The Single Petal of a Rose" in a duo format with Nakamura, Ellington's blues number "The Shepherd" and "Julian's Shuffle," Kengo's original dedicated to Mance.
In this well-recorded CD (recorded in New York's Avatar Studio by the great Joe Ferla), Nakamura demonstrates his growth as both player and composer. His big, strong sound and honest approach to music are very impressive in this no-gimmicks, straight-ahead jazz album. His collaborators all perform brilliantly and add significant value to the proceedings. Recommended!
Produced by Kengo Nakamura. Recorded by Joe Ferla at Avatar Studio, New York, on June 25 & 26, 2008. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
