Phil Stewart (drums)
Release Date:06/23/2010
Description:The eagerly awaited new recording by the star tenorist Grant Stewart is a tribute to Sonny Rollins, the tenor titan who has inspired and had a tremendous influence on the younger musician.

It must be a tricky proposition for a tenorman to tackle the tunes either written by Rollins or associated with his definitive performances, but Stewart sounds thoroughly relaxed and confident, showing signs of respect and influence but ultimately playing in his own style. The one-horn quartet setting thrusts Stewart into the solo spotlight most of the time, and his full-bodied tone, inspired phrasing and confident delivery constantly captivate us.

Stewart is supported by superb musicians and frequent collaborators: David Hazeltine on piano, Peter Washington on bass and his younger brother Phil Stewart on drums. Recommended for fans of straight-ahead jazz and especially fans of Grant Stewart!
