Artist/Band: | | Steve Kuhn Trio | Name: | | Baubles, Bangles And Beads | Cat No.: | | VHCD-1003 | Performed by: | | Steve Kuhn (piano) David Finck (bass) Billy Drummond (drums)
| Release Date: | | 04/16/2008 | Description: | | Steve Kuhn is one of the most exciting American jazz pianists today, performing and recording with seemingly unlimited energy and enthusiasm. One of his unique -- and winning -- assets is his affinity and deep knowledge of classical repertories. In 2005, he recorded for Venus Records Pavane For A Dead Princess (TKCV-35212), a collection of "jazzified" classical tunes which became an instant hit. The present album Baubles, Bangles And Beads is a continuation of that concept.
With the same personnel as Pavane (David Finck on bass and Billy Drummond on drums), Kuhn boldly utilizes relatively well-known classical melodies by Borodin, Chopin, Brahms, Satie, Rachmaninov and Grieg as a launching pad for thrilling, joyful and dynamic jazz improvisations. Highlights include breathtaking treatments of Rachmaninov's Grieg's Piano Concertos.
Kuhn is clearly at the top of his game. His trio mates provide rock-solid and dynamic support as well as exciting solos in this varied program. Highly recommended!
Produced by Tetsuo Hara. Recorded at The Studio in New York on August 30 and 31, 2007. Engineered by Katherine Miller. Mixed by Venus Hyper Magnum Sound: Shuji Kitamura and Tetsuo Hara. Swing Journal Gold Disc. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
