| Release Date: | | 05/21/2008 | Description: | | Manhattan Jazz Orchestra was created by pianist/arranger David Matthews and an accomplished Japanese producer Shigeyuki Kawashima (both GRAMMY winners) in 1989. It is one of the premier and most prolific big bands in the US, having released 13 CDs over the years.
Following their Glenn Miller tribute and Swing Journal Gold Disc, In The Mood (XQDJ-1003) is their fourteenth and latest release: Spain. This time, Matthew and co. decided to tackle (mostly) the tunes associated with Spain. The album opens with a fiery rendition of Chick Corea's title composition, and goes onto a refreshing, 8-beat arrangement of "En Aranjuez Con Tu Amor" (from Concierto de Aranjuez).
The top-notch New York musicians execute the tricky "Sabre Dance" (from Khatchatourian's Gayaneh) with perfection. Other highlights include the brilliant "Rhapsody In Blue," Matthews' original "Fiesta de Espana" and the soulful "Amazing Grace."
Matthews' arrangements are brilliant throughout: They are technically sophisticated but accessible. Star players such as Lew Soloff, Ryan Kisor, Randy Brecker, Jim Pugh and Andy Snitzer add fire to the proceedings with their inspired solos. The quality of the recorded sound is quite good, too. A solid recommendation for fans of big band music!
Produced by Shigeyuki Kawashima and David Matthews. Recorded at Sear Sound Studio, New York, on October 5 and 6, 2007. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
