The Jazz At The Concertgebouw Series is a stunning discovery!

For the first time ever, we get to listen to a series of live concert recordings of top American jazz musicians, made at the world-famous Concertgebouw in Amsterdam in the late 1950s and early 1960s!

This incredible 2 CD set contains two complete concerts by the Miles Davis Quintet which took place at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw in April and October, 1960. The concert in April featured John Coltrane who was about to leave the group with the golden rhythm section of Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb. The midnight concert turned out to be controversial, and half the audience got up and left as they were turned off by Coltrane's somewhat experimental sounds and modal improvisations. To our ears there's nothing controversial, of course, and we get to enjoy the group's superb performance, especially the inspired solos by Davis and Coltrane.

The second concert took place in October of the same year after Coltrane had left the group, and Davis took alto saxophonist Sonny Stitt along with the same rhythm section. Not a natural fit for the modal structure, Stitt sounds uncomfortable until he gets to stretch out on two standards from which Davis sat out.

Never before released, these recordings capture historic performances of a legendary jazz group during the time of transition. The sound quality of these recordings is quite good, too. A must-have item for serious jazz fans!

Recorded at Concertgebouw, Amsterdam on April 9 and October 15, 1960. The insert contains a full-length liner notes in English and historic photos from the concert.
