Limited-Edition Reissue Series!

To celebrate its 25th anniversay, Japan's Videoarts Music label re-released its hit jazz CDs as an attractively priced, limited edition "Hear The Music" series.

Alto Legacy, recorded in 1995, was a very special project that became possible thanks to the idea of a Japanese producer and backing of a Japanese label. They put the legendary saxophonist Phil Woods, who was 64 at the time, into a studio with Vincent Herring and Antonio Hart, two great altoists of a younger generation.

The special sextet with three altos played jazz standards that are strongly associated with alto legends such as Jackie McLean ("Blue Minor"), Gigi Gryce ("Minority"), Art Pepper ("The Summer Knows") and Cannonball Adderley ("Stars Fell On Alabama"). Backed by a superb, inter-generational rhythm section of pianist Anthony Wonsey, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Carl Allen, the three alto saxophonists trade fiery solos. An excellent idea, well executed. This is a very hot, memorable album!

Produced by Makoto Kimata, Carl Allen & Vincent Herring. Recorded June 4 & 5, 1995, New York.
