Artist/Band: | | Walter Bishop, Jr. Trio | Name: | | Speak Low [HQCD] | Cat No.: | | MZCB-1179 | Performed by: | | Walter Bishop, Jr. (piano) Jimmy Garrison (bass) G.T. Hogan (drums)
| Release Date: | | 11/26/2008 | Description: | | Swing Journal Gold Disc!
Released by a short-lived minor label called Jazzline, Speak Low by pianist Walter Bishop, Jr. quickly disappeared from the market, and thanks to the strong musical content, soon became one of the rarest and most desired jazz records of all time.
Recorded in 1961 with Jimmy Garrison on bass and G.T. Hogan on drums, this stellar album is considered by many to be the strongest recorded effort by Bishop. Indeed, this was the then 33-years-old pianist's first album as a leader. His boppish and sometimes modal solos are incisive, dynamic and imaginative, and the powerful support from the rhythm section makes this album one of the most memorable and swingingest piano trio records from this period.
Now, the good people at Muzak, Japan, had a rare opportunity to remaster and reissue this highly sought-after album from the original master tapes onto superior-sounding HQCD (which uses newly developed materials for better sound quality but still is compatible with all regular CD players). As a result we have in our hands by far the best CD reissue of this hidden gem. Compared to an older CD reissue, the sound of this HQCD edition is clearer and offers much better definition and resolution, thought there are certain unavoidable issues due to the recording and the conditions of the master tapes.
Recorded March 14, 1961. This Japanese HQCD edition comes in a mini-LP (paper sleeve) package. HQCD is compatible with all regular CD players. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
