Renato Sellani (b. 1927) is an Italian jazz piano maestro who has been active in the Italian jazz scene since the 1950s. He has performed with European and American jazz greats including Lee Konitz, Chet Baker, Sarah Vaughan, Helen Merrill, Phil Woods, Tony Scott, Herb Geller, Stephane Grappelli, Buddy Collette and Franco Ambrosetti.
At age 80, Sellani recorded this Japanese debut CD for Venus Records with his regular trio of 25 years. Venus producer Tetsuo Hara made twin albums: The present CD is a collection of standard songs that became hits in America, and the forthcoming CD will feature Italian standards.
Entirely self-taught pianist, Sellani is simply amazing in terms of technical facility, imagination, sophisticated sense of harmony, adventurousness, passion and emotion. This disc is full of knock-out performances, from the dramatic "Besame Mucho" to breathtakingly beautiful ballads "My Foolish Heart" and "My Funny Valentine." His musical partners provide solid support and contribute exciting solos throughout. A masterpiece!
