Artist/Band: | | Yoichi Hirai Sextet | Name: | | Lennie's Pennies | Cat No.: | | MMEX-124 | Performed by: | | Yoichi Hirai (guitar) Hiromi Masuda (alto sax) Ryosuke Hashizume (tenor sax) Kaido Yutaka (bass) Kentaro Ebiko (bass) Takashi Itani (drums)
| Release Date: | | 09/20/2008 | Description: | | Lennie Tristano has a place in the history of jazz with his unique contribution: a cerebral style characterized by layered polyrhythms and sophisticated contrapuntal ideas. His disciples such as Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh, Peter Ind and Ted Brown carried his legacy forward and left their mark.
Now, we should count Japanese guitarist Yoichi Hirai among Tristano's desciples. Although he never met Tristano, Hirai has studied his music extensively and keeping it alive in the 21st century, acutally moving it forward with his own contributions.
With many years of club performances under their belt, the unique piano-less, two-bassists group went into a studio to record this debut album. The two bassists, often playing different beats, creates a unique feel of layered rhythms, a Tristano signature, and the leader and two saxophonists take impressive solos throughout. The musicians have completely internalized the compositions and are now creating their own music. And, most importantly, they swing!
Recommended for fans of the Tristano School and cool bebop!
