Description:A classically-trained, technically brilliant pianist, Cyrus Chestnut is very popular in Japan, and has released quite a few CDs with a for-Japan-only all-star trio called Manhattan Trinity. A musician with a strong affinity to soul and gospel music, some of his recent releases in the US market have been more concept-oriented, such as the most recent Cyrus Plays Elvis (2007).

With Black Nile, Chestnut returns to his straight-ahead jazz domain. It is a rewarding collection of jazz musicians' original compositions. The choices are interesting and refreshing: Cedar Walton's "Holy Land," Ron Carter's "Little Waltz," Wayne Shorter's title track, and Herbie Hancock's "Theme From Blow-Up." Bobby Hutcherson is represented twice with "Little B's Poem" and "'Til Then." Chestnut wrote "12 Bar Ballad" and "The Happiness Man" while the bassist Buster Williams contributed "The Wind Of An Immortal Soul." "A Tear On My Chest" is a composition by an Italian jazz pianist Andrea Pagani.

With a powerful and springy rhythm section of Williams and Al Foster, Chestnut tackles each tune head-on, employing his classical sensibilities and formidable skills. There are no gimmicks here: only wonderful compositions, clever interpretations and exciting improvisations by three master musicians.

If you are a fan of Cyrus Chestnut, and, like yours truly, have been waiting for his straight-ahead jazz album, this one's for you! Heartily recommended!
