Artist/Band:Tierney Sutton
Name:Something Cool [Hybrid SACD]
Cat No.:SACD-63548
Performed by:Tierney Sutton (vocal)
Christian Jacob (piano)
Trey Henry (bass)
Ray Brinker (drums)
Description:Tierney Sutton is one of my favorite jazz singers: She has a beautiful voice, impeccable technique and unique vision to turn familiar standards upside down and create something new and exciting. Another asset of hers is her long-standing working relation with a superb band, including the great pianist Christian Jacob, bassists Kevin Axt and Trey Henry, and the supreme drummer Ray Brinker. Her voice blends so well with the rest of the band, just like another instrument.

This 2002 release marked her rapid maturation into one of the most complete contemporary jazz singers, one who can range from high-speed scat to moody, emotion-charged ballads. She can fly through chord changes with real harmonic invention, as on her witty version of "Ding-dong! The Witch Is Dead," while her wistful way with a ballad recalls June Christy on the title song. Her warmth shows on Willie Nelson's "Crazy," with pianist Christian Jacob's jazz harmonies helping to develop Sutton's personal take on the country standard.

She's joined here by her working trio of Jacob, Trey Henry on bass, and Ray Brinker on drums, and the group sounds both inspired and inspiring, alert to the nuances in Sutton's vocals and quick to supply any needed stimulus. The pure DSD recording helps bring the superb sound quality to all listeners through this hybrid SACD.

Produced by Elaine Martone. Recorded at O'Henry Sound Studios, Hollywood, March 18-20, 2002. This is a hybrid SACD derived of pure DSD recording, containing an SACD stereo layer, an SACD multichannel layer, and a CD stereo layer. This disc is compatible with all regular CD players.
