Artist/Band: | | Diana Panton | Name: | | Yesterday Perhaps | Cat No.: | | DP-01 | Performed by: | | Diana Panton (vocal) Don Thompson (bass,piano) Reg Schwager (guitar)
| Description: | | Diana Panton may not be a household name in the U.S. yet, but she is being heralded as one of Canada's most promising jazz vocalists. Her aesthetic sense has attracted the attention of some of the jazz world's most respected masters. Discovered by legendary Canadian multi-instrumentalist Don Thompson at age 19, she later studied under Norma Winstone, Sheila Jordan and Jay Clayton at the reputed jazz workshop at the Banff Center for the Arts.
When the time came to record her debut album, award-winning guitarist Reg Schwager was invited to join Don Thompson for some stellar accompaniment behind Panton's vocals.
Panton's voice is pure, sensitive, and soulful. She has the coquettishness and inventiveness of Blossom Dearie and the relaxed assuredness of Irene Kral. She is not one to dazzle the listener with fast scatting or adding surprising twists to well-known songs. Her art is in inflections and phrasings that are subtle but very effective. A perfect example that a singer doesn't have to shout to leave a strong impression, her individuality shines through the intimate connection she unfailingly establishes with the listener.
The accompanyment by just two musicians is also very effective because Schwager and Thompson (who plays piano or bass depending on the tune) are masters who possess great skills and a highest level of musicianship. Yesterday Perhaps is a stunning debut CD by a very talented singer. I am very impressed and instantly became a fan. Strongly recommended to all jazz vocal fans!
Recorded September 2004 at Inception Sound Studios, Toronto, Canada.
