Artist/Band: | | Emil Viklicky Trio | Name: | | Kafka On The Shore - Tribute to Haruki Murakami | Cat No.: | | VHCD-1060 | Performed by: | | Emil Viklicky (piano) Josef Fetcho (bass) Laco Tropp (drums) Jitka Hosprova (viola) Jana Sykorova (mezzo soprano)
| Release Date: | | 11/16/2011 | Description: | | Emil Viklicky of the Czech Republic (b. 1948) was introduced to Japanese jazz fans by Venus Records with his debut CD Sinfonietta which featured classical composer Leos Janacek's music and his own compositions based on or inspired by Moravian songs.
Viklicky's second release from Venus is also a unique concept album. It's a tribute to the internationally renowned Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami, whose recent work featured Janacek's Sinfonietta as an important device. Viklicky met Murakami in 2010 and was surprised how well the writer was versed with the music of Janacek. A while later, he decided to dedicate his second album for Venus to Murakami, who is also known as a jazz afficionado.
The program consists of Viklicky's originals inspired by the literary works of Murakami, a Beatles tune ("Eleanor Rigby") and several well known jazz tunes. Viklicky is supported by bassist Josef Fetcho and drummer Laco Tropp, both excellent musicians based in Prague. Classical violist Jitka Hosprova and mezzo soprano Jana Sykorova appear as guests on one tune each.
The music is, like Murakami's novels, mysterious, emotionally charged and compelling. The trio swings with conviction and Viklicky's virtuosic performance enhances his strong compositions and arrangements. Recommended!
Produced by Tetsuo Hara. Recorded at Czech Radio Studio A in Prague on April 20, 21 and May 4, 2011. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
