Artist/Band: | | Diana Panton | Name: | | Christmas Kiss | Cat No.: | | DIACD-5605 | Performed by: | | Diana Panton (vocal) Guido Basso (cornet,flugelhorn,trumpet) Reg Schwager (guitar) Don Thompson (bass,piano,vibraphone) Harrison Kennedy (vocal)
| Description: | | When I first heard Diana Panton's first album, Yesterday Perhaps (released in 2005), I became a big fan and decided to carry all of her CDs. As her last four albums have demonstrated, Diana's voice is pure, sensitive, and soulful. She has the coquettishness and inventiveness of Blossom Dearie and the relaxed assuredness of Irene Kral.
In this very special Christmas album, Diana returns to her trusted collaborators Reg Schwager on guitar, Don Thompson who plays bas, piano or vibraphone, and the great lyrical trumpeter, Guido Basso. Diana makes this album interesting and more meaningful by great song choices: In addition to familiar chestnuts, she included lesser known but very charming seasonal songs such as "Winter Weather" Dave Frishberg's "Snowbound" and Bacharach's "Winter Warm", sang a couple of songs in French--including the beautiful "C'est Noel Cheri"--and wrote the title track herself with Thompson.
The arrangements are simple, elegant and executed with great taste. Diana's voice is exquisite, warm and cozy, and the performance of the musicians impeccable. Harrison Kennedy adds charm as a guest singer in the duet performance of "Baby It's Cold Outside". As Guido Basso writes in his liner notes, I could listen to this recording all year long! Recommended!
Recorded August 2011 at Inception Sound Studios, Toronto, Canada.
