Description:Miraculous discovery of a historic recording!
Recorded live in 1963 at New Latin Quarter, a premier night club in Tokyo!

New Latin Quarter opend its doors in the middle of Tokyo in 1959 as an ambitious international night club. With a big stage, 300 tables and over 200 employees, it entertained the rich, the powerful, and the famous until 1989. The acts who graced the stage were also top-notch, and included legendary jazz musicians and singers such as Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole and Helen Merrill. Now, the live recordings from these shows in 1963 and 1964 have been released for the first time!

Helen Merrill, a singer who has been very popular in Japan since the 1960s, sang at New Latin Quarter four times, in 1960, 1963, 1965 and 1966. She loved Japan in return, and even lived there for a few years after 1966. This CD includes her concert that took place in March, 1963. She is accompanied by her own pianist George Gruntz and a Japanese band led by alto saxophonist Keiichiro Ebihara. At thrity-three, she was at the top of her game vocally, and enchants the audience with her one-of-a-kind husky voice and jazzy interpretations of well-known standards. Although this recording has some issues in terms of sound quality, it is an important historic document of an important jazz singer.

Recorded live at New Latin Quarter in Tokyo on March 1, 1963. Mono. Gate fold paper sleeve packaging.
