Description:Swing Journal Gold Disc!

Erena Terakubo may be a mouthful for non-Japanese speakers, but you should get used to it as you'll hear this name often in the future. This 17-years-old alto saxophonist from Japan is the real deal! I haven't been this excited about a new jazz musician for a long time!

Born and raised in Hokkaido, the northern most island and prefecture in Japan, Terakubo first caught people's attention when she was just 10 years old, playing an instrument almost half her size and producing big sound. She played for five years in the Sapporo Junior Jazz Orchestra, and has already spent several summers at Berklee College of Music, getting lessons from Terri Lyne Carrington. She has taken lessons from or performed with Herbie Hancock, Tiger Okoshi, Terumasa Hino, Yosuke Yamashita and Sadao Watanabe.

For her eagerly awaited debut recording, the team led by producer Yasohachi Itoh pulled out all the stops. They took her to New York's Avatar Studio, gathered Kenny Barron (p), Christian McBride (b), Lee Pearson (ds) and Peter Bernstein (g). They even took the best Sony engineers to the studio to record the sessions in pure DSD!

The result is a stunning, powerful debut album that is full of exciting moments. Not only Terakubo more than holds her own among the seasoned pros, she even managed to excite and inspire these first-call musicians to play their asses off! (Pardon my language, I'm really excited.) How often do you hear Kenny Barron and Christian McBride together on an album, performing at their best? That alone would be enough reason to buy this CD.

But of course, the true star of the show is Erena Terakubo. Listen to her unaccompanied solo that begins the program, a proud fanfare that tells us all of the arrival of something big! In her playing one can detect many influences of the great alto saxophonists of the past and present: the power of Charlie Parker, the expressiveness of Art Pepper, the sexiness of Johnny Hodges, and even the raw emotional power of Kenny Garrett.

Her maturity beyond her ears is also reflected in the selection of cool tunes such as Wayne Shorter's "Yes Or No" and Joe Henderson's "Black Narcissus." She even wrote two originals "Tim Tam Time" and "Like The Sunlight" which are quite interesting and effective. The title track "North Bird" was composed for her by the legendary Japanese jazz pianist, Yosuke Yamashita, combining a reference to Charlie Parker and the fact that she hails from the northern most island of Japan.

This is not just a great debut album of a huge new talent. For me, this is THE BEST new jazz album I've heard all year!! On top of everything, the sound quality of this CD featuring DSD recording, Sony's new Blue Laser Diode cutting and green label coating is awesome! Very enthusiastically recommended!!!

Recorded at Avatar Studio, New York, on March 28 & 29, 2010. Although recorded in DSD, this is a redbook CD and is playable on standard CD players.
