Swing Journal Gold Disc and winner of 2006 Swing Journal New Star Award!

A young pianist from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Dan Nimmer is definately one to watch. After he graduated from Northern Illinois university, he moved to New York in 2004, and within a year he was picked up by Wynton Marsalis. Last year I saw him live with the Wynton Marsalis Quintet and was mighty impressed by his imaginative playing and ability to "tell a story" with his well-structured solos.

As the title suggests, Nimmer's second CD released from Venus Records is a tribute to Wynton Kelly, who was a swingy, bluesy and funky genius and a groove master who worked with Miles Davis and others. Jimmy Cobb, the veteran drummer who played with Kelly in the historic "Kind of Blue" session, bridges the two generations and validates Nimmer's efforts with his impeccable groove.

You will hear a lot about this wonderful young pianist in the future. When you do, remember that the his first leader albums were recorded by a Japanese label called Venus Records, and that you heard about them here at Eastwind Import!

Recorded at The Studio in New York in May 2006 by Katherine Miller. Mixed and mastered by Venus Hyper Magnum Sound. Special gate-fold mini-LP (paper sleeve) edition.
