Release Date:09/19/2007
Description:When I first heard A Beautiful Friendship by the Sliding Hammers, an impressive trombone duo group led by two Swedish sisters, I was also quite impressed by their pianist. I made a mental note to remember his name, Mathias Algotsson. Apparently, I was not the only one who was impressed, as Spice of Life has released Algotsson's trio album in no time.

For In Copenhagen, the talented Swede went to Denmark and met with the legendary drummer Ed Thigpen who was part of THE Oscar Peterson Trio and has been a resident of Copenhagen since 1972. The first-call Danish bassist Jesper Bodilsen rounded up the trio.

With the opening number "Mr. Taste" (Algotsson's original composition dedicated to Thigpen), you immediately realize that Algotsson has a deep and firm understanding of the jazz tradition. His idols must include Peterson, Red Garland and Hank Jones. His traditional approach, fresh, intelligent ideas and compositional skills reminds me of other talented pianists of his generation such as Christian Jacob and Tamir Hendelman. What a wonderful talent!

The master drummer Ed Thigpen shines throughout the program, especially with his impeccable brush work. Bodilsen provides a solid foundation with his warm, big tone. This is a wonderful piano trio album, full of beautiful touches, sharp rhythms and buoyant swing. If you haven't heard him before, remember his name. We'll be hearing a lot more from Mathias Algotsson.

Produced by Mathias Algotsson & Tom Sassa. Recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark on June 3 and 4, 2007.
