Manhattan Jazz Quintet is an all-star band led by pianist and arranger David Matthews. It is a special band that records exclusively for the Japanese market, and has an almost quarter-century history. Needless to say, it is extremely popular in Japan.

This latest recording marks many special occasions. It is their first release from the new label Birds Records. It is also a reunion of sorts, as the album title "V.S.O.P." which stands for "Very Special Onetime Performance" suggests.

In addition to Matthews, the current edition of band features trumpeter Lew Soloff and tenor saxophonist Andy Snitzer. For this V.S.O.P., they are joined by the first drummer of the MJQ, Steve Gadd, and the second bassist, Eddie Gomez.

Also, they took requests from the readers of Swing Journal and selected the tunes based on them. As it turned out, the program consists mostly of tunes associated with Miles Davis or his associates, with the sole exception of "Some Skunk Funk."

One of the highlights is an almost 15-minutes long "Miles Davis Marathon Session Medley," which combines tunes from the legendary Riverside sessions that resulted in four classic albums: Cookin', Workin' Relaxin' and Steamin'. At the end of the medley, Matthews put his own composition called "Groovin'" dedicated to Davis.

The all-star band sounds terrific here. The golden rhythm section provides kinetic grooves and pushes the entire group. The horn players' performances are smooth and technically perfect. The sound quality of the recording is also excellent. Recommended!
